When your child has outgrown their standard car seat, it is time for another car seat. Unless your child is already 4 foot 9 inches tall and 40 pounds, you can’t rely on the seat belts in your car. They are designed for adults, and do not fit toddlers properly. The best solution is a toddler booster seat.

Most states have laws that specify a certain age, height, and weight for children that denotes when they can start sitting in the vehicle seat without a car booster seat. The typical toddler booster seat uses the vehicle’s seat belt system, but there are other types of booster seats for toddlers that can be used.

There are several types of toddler booster seat. The first kind is the one that you commonly think of when you are shopping around. These types of booster car seats have no back or headrest. First, for the backless booster seat, it is important to make sure that your vehicle’s seat belts fit properly. This toddler car seat is specifically designed to work with a shoulder and lap belt.

The lap belt should sit across your child’s pelvic area, not across the thighs or abdomen. The shoulder belt should fit across the chest and shoulder region, and you may need to use a belt positioning clip to make both parts of the seat belt work properly. You may also need to get a Velcro cover piece that covers the shoulder belt to keep it from irritating your child’s neck.

Second, you need to make sure that if you have one of the childrens booster seats with the harness system, your child’s safety depends on how well this seat is installed in your vehicle.

Since the main restraint that holds the toddler booster car seat in place on your vehicle’s seat is the existing seat belts, make sure that it is tight. When you thread the seat belt through the proper holes and connect it to the buckle, pull the shoulder belt upward to tighten the lap belt portion.
